OCTOBER 2023

October is National Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

During this time, we honor those we have lost and stand with those who have found safety and healing.

Domestic violence affects all of us, regardless of our backgrounds. According to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, this year, 1 in 4 women and 1 in 9 men in the U.S. will experience severe physical violence from an intimate partner. Young women between the ages of 18 and 34 are particularly vulnerable.

In 2023 InterAct expects to serve over 6,900 victims of domestic and/or sexual violence with crisis intervention and support services. And we look to you, our community, to support the increased demand for the lifesaving services InterAct provides.

Together, we can save lives, rebuild lives, and secure safer futures. Thank you for standing with us.

What is Domestic Violence?

Domestic violence is the willful intimidation, physical assault, battery, sexual assault, and/or other abusive behavior as part of a systematic pattern of power and control perpetrated by one intimate partner against another. It includes physical violence, sexual violence, psychological violence, and emotional abuse. The frequency and severity of domestic violence can vary dramatically; however, the one constant component of domestic violence is one partner’s consistent efforts to maintain power and control over the other.

How InterAct Helps

Dedicated to ending the cycle of domestic and sexual violence in Wake County, NC, InterAct saves lives, rebuilds lives, and secures safer futures for victims and survivors and their families. InterAct serves as Wake County’s only comprehensive support service provider and we make a life-or-death difference 24/7/365. Each year, InterAct’s crisis response, support services, and community education/outreach reaches approximately 10,000 Wake County residents ─ our friends, family members, neighbors, and peers ─ of which more than 6,900 are victims.
