DECEMBER 2023

Building a safer community together.

Building a safer community doesn’t happen overnight, and it doesn’t happen with just one person.

Over the course of one year, a lot can happen. A client who reaches out to InterAct in a crisis will start with a conversation with an advocate. While sharing their story, they will work with a crisis counselor to establish a safety plan and will evaluate the next steps to begin their individual journey to a life free from violence.

85% of InterAct’s shelter residents who complete the program do not return to abusive homes.

Since each person’s journey to accessing InterAct is uniquely different, our programs and services must be individually tailored. YOUR support makes these services available at no cost and helps make the path to escaping a life of violence more accessible for those who may not have direct access or a clear plan. Donna’s Story

Donna reached out to InterAct’s 24-hour crisis line, sharing her harrowing journey of escaping an abusive partner she’d endured for 13 years

During the call, Donna connected with one of InterAct’s PEEPs (Personal and Economic Empowerment Program) team members for case management. In this initial meeting, they addressed the numerous barriers she faced. They established goals related to housing, transportation, clothing, and employment. When Donna arrived at InterAct, her first in-person meeting provided a simultaneous feeling of relief and an overwhelming sense of uncertainty about her next steps.

Over the next five months, Donna benefited from a range of services, including InterAct’s support programs and connections to our partner agencies. She received clothing assistance through a voucher for InterAct’s resale shop, Pass It On, and was referred to Note In the Pocket to receive clothing for her child. Through InterAct’s in-house pantry, Donna received household items and food staples until she could access food stamps. To address her transportation challenges, InterAct utilized its available funding granted by Wake County’s Bridge to Home program. Additionally, InterAct offered financial support for renewing her nursing certification, enabling her to secure employment.

With assistance from InterAct’s Housing Navigator, Donna eventually found stable housing. Our Director of Housing guided her through the complex process of submitting the required paperwork for her housing inspection and lease agreement while covering the initial deposit and coordinating with the landlord.

All these services were made possible by supporters and donors like you. Donna is living proof of the remarkable transformation that can occur when YOU GIVE.

Your generosity helps survivors rebuild their lives and secure a safer future.
